Forest inventory records incorporating individual tree data are an important source of information about the extent and severity of past rates of forest decline, thus providing a temporal perspective for contemporary observations. We demonstrate the potential of this approach by using continuous forest inventory (CFI) data to reconstruct the extent, severity, pattern of development and site-factor associations for white ash decline in Massachusetts. White ash (Fraxinus americana L.) increased in basal area on Massachusetts CFI plots at about 1.5% per year from 1962 to 1979. Ash decline is, however, locally severe. Plot decline status was estimated, based on vigor rating, and growth and mortality rates of white ash. Plots with a mean change in basal area per year of −0.5% and/or with a mean vigor rating of 2.0 (on a scale of 0–4) were classified as ‘decline’. Using these criteria, 20% of the 82 CFI plots with 10% total basal area of white ash in 1962 were classified as ‘decline’ in both 1979 and 1991. These results suggest that statewide there has been no net loss of ash basal area since 1962. The total forest area affected by ash decline has not increased in the past decade.
Analyses of the CFI data indicate that decline was most prevalent on mesic sites, high on the landscape and/or on steep slopes. Such sites are potentially subject to large fluctuations in soil moisture availability during drought periods. Relationships identified between the prevalence of ash decline and site factors were further evaluated within a 2 ha intensived study site in the center of a 13 ha white ash stand affected by ash decline in 1990. Decline was heterogeneously distributed within the stand, with declining trees most frequent on the ‘decline-prone’ site-type identified through CFI plot analyses. 相似文献
The mean values of the total number of nematodes found in each of four pine plantations in Nigeria were depressed during the dry season to a minimum between March and April. A gradual increase in the population started from June–July, and the population reached its peak in August–October. The seasonal decline in nematode population coincided with the period of low soil moisture. An important ecological factor affecting population changes in the selected plantations was the vegetation cover; while a gradual decline in nematode population was observed in the 1968, 1974a and 1974b plantations, which have a full canopy, a sharp decline in nematode population was observed in the 1982 plot, which did not have a complete canopy. Populations of some nematode genera, such as Rotylenchus spp., Criconemella spp., Coslenchus spp. and Triversus spp., declined to zero in this last plantation. 相似文献
Summary Explosion pulping results in strong pulp with breaking length at 100 ml CSF (Canadian standard freeness) higher than 6.5 kg and burst index approaching 4 KPa m2/g. The real advantage of eucalyptus explosion pulp over conventional CMP (chemical-mechanical pulp) and CTMP (chemical-thermo-mechanical pulp) is observed when the impregnation solution contains less than 2% NaOH along with 8% Na2SO3, and when the liquor/chips ratio equals 3. The strength of eucalyptus explosion pulp obtained by using a pretreatment solution consisting of 8% Na2SO3 and 1% NaOH is comparable with that of eucalyptus kraft pulp. The concentration of NaOH present in the pretreatment solution has a very important effect on the specific refining energy of eucalyptus explosion pulp as well as of CMP and CTMP. The explosion pulp obtained from eucalyptus pretreated with a solution containing an appropriate quantity of caustic along with Na2SO3 not only requires a minimum specific refining energy but also provides the highest strength values in comparison to that of CMP and CTMP. 相似文献
In India, small farmers have generally found that the growing of eucalypts as a cash crop provides poor returns, and many have reverted to growing annual crops. Farmgate prices have been much lower than retail prices, due to the existence of middlemen, and retail prices have fallen to lower levels than expected as markets have become saturated. This article describes the situation in eastern Gujarant, where farmers sold their eucalypts directly to buyers at prices close to those in organised wood markets. An important reason for this unusual situation is the absence in Gujarat of controls on eucalyptus sales, which has helped producers to avoid dependence on rent-seeking intermediaries. The survey shows that growing eucalyptus can be a profitable activity for small farmers, given the right circumstances. 相似文献
Summary Ozonation of kraft pulp and oxygen-delignified kraft pulp in acetic acid/water mixtures has been studied at different pulp consistencies with and without an inhibitor to obtain information about the limitations of the selectivity of the ozone treatment. The experiments have been performed according to a full factorial design and data have been analysed by stepwise regression analysis. The results show that a better delignification selectivity can be achieved when ozone is applied in acetic acid media instead of conventional aqueous media. By combining conventional oxygen delignification and ozonation in acetic acid, pulps with equal strength properties and better optical properties compared to those of conventional O(DC)E prebleached pulps can be obtained. This study has also revealed that the reagent is utilized far more efficiently in ozonation at high pulp consistency (35%) than in ozonation at low consistency (1%), and that a similar selectivity can be achieved in both types of ozonation by choosing appropriate conditions. The greater selectivity of ozonation in acetic acid than in water is interpreted in terms of different stabilities of the oxidant in these reaction media. The relation between the formation of hydroxyl radicals and the extent and selectivity of delignification during ozonation has been investigated. The final bleaching of pulps prebleached with ozone in acetic acid medium has been studied. Two final bleaching sequences are presented, by which pulps with ISO brightness levels of 79% and 90% can be produced. The authors are indebted to the Swedish National Board for Technical Development (Styrelsen för Teknisk Utveckling) for financial support for this work and to STORA Technology for pulp tests and analyses 相似文献
The community composition of Carabid beetles, some species ofwhich are known predators of pine beauty moth, was examinedwithin a Scottish plantation forest. Sites differing in soiltype and the species of trees planted were sampled with pitfalltraps in most weeks of a 3year period. There were faunaldifferences between sites with lodgepole pine on deep peat andother sites in the study (lodgepole pine on iron-pan soil, speciesmixture of lodgepole and Scots pine, and pure stands of Scotspine). In general deep peat sites supported fewer species andindividuals of carabids. Three Carabus species were implicatedas likely predators of Panolis flammea pupae and each was lessabundant on the sites with lodgepole pine. It is suggested thatthe susceptibility to pine beauty moth of lodgepole pine growingon deep peat substrates is at least partly attributable to impoverishedpredator faunas. 相似文献
Sublethally infected adults ofChilo partellus Swinhoe were allowed to mate in experimental cages. The mated gravid females were dissected and specific tissues including eggs were removed and examined under both light and electron microscopes. Males were similarly dissected and examined under a ligh microscope only. Results showed that infected males did not transmitNosema marucae Odindo and Jura venereally. Microscopic studies revealed thatN. marucae was transmitted through contamination of the egg chorion. No spores were seen in the yolk neither were spores seen in the spermathecae. The significance of these studies is discussed. 相似文献
Infection rates of the nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) in the cotton leafworm,Spodoptera littoralis larvae were assessed from 1985 through 1986 in clover fields at El-Behiera, El-Fayoum and El-Gharbia governorates. Infection rates of the pathogen were highest near the end of spring when the cotton leafworm larval populations were increasing. For the different governorates, the percentages of virus infection were almost higher in 1985-season than in 1986. El-Fayoum-larval population was the most infected by NPV followed by El-Gharbia and El-Behiera-populations, respectively. There was a positive correlation between infection rates of NPV on one hand, and density of larva and ambient temperature on the other. 相似文献
Summary The interpretation of data from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) is dependent on the size of the excitation volume, the magnitude of which for organic materials such as wood has been little studied. From the analysis of a model system comprised of a thin layer of gold sandwiched between two layers of an epoxy plastic, it was shown that about 90% of all excitations arise from a volume about 6 m wide and 4 m deep. However, these dimensions vary with the orientation of the gold relative to the specimen surface, and the specimen tilt. Theoretical predictions based on these data support, but not conclusively, the previously published SEM/EDAX evidence of the penetration of urea formaldehyde resins into the wood cell wall in particleboard manufacture. This paper was written while A.
